NTA Initiates Shift to Online NEET-UG, Asks AICTE to Identify Government College Infrastructure

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has initiated a nationwide exercise to identify and develop computer-based examination centres at government institutions ahead of transitioning the NEET-UG medical entrance test to an online format next year. As part of this drive, the NTA has partnered with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to evaluate available information technology infrastructure and vacant facilities across state-run higher education campuses. AICTE has instructed vice-chancellors of state technical universities, along with directors and principals of government engineering colleges, polytechnics, and university departments, to submit detailed asset assessments by September 15, 2026. Institutions are required to submit officially certified data on the number of functional desktop computers, high-speed internet connectivity, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, CCTV surveillance setups, and available floor space. This systemic shift comes following directives from the Union Ministry of Education to phase out pen-and-paper OMR examinations in favour of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for major national entrance tests. The reform measures follow earlier examination irregularities and paper leak allegations that led to widespread student protests and structural overhauls within the NTA. By establishing a permanent network of Standard Testing Centres (STCs) inside government-administered colleges rather than relying on private venues, authorities aim to strengthen examination security, eliminate fraudulent practices, and ensure a smooth, standardized environment for over two million medical aspirants nationwide.
