Ramaiah Memorial Hospital Hosts Organ Donation Awareness Drive in Bengaluru to Address Transplant Deficit

Ramaiah Memorial Hospital in Bengaluru hosted a public health awareness initiative focused on organ donation under the banner "The Gift of Life" on September 2, 2026. Attended by Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader, medical specialists, transplant recipients, and donor families, the program highlighted the critical organ shortage in Karnataka and across India. During the event, Health Minister U.T. Khader emphasized the necessity of strengthening the infrastructure and public awareness surrounding deceased organ donation, particularly from brain-dead patients. While national statistics show over 20,000 organ transplants were performed in the preceding year, over 80 percent relied on living donors, leaving a nationwide waitlist of more than 89,000 patients awaiting life-saving organs. India's deceased organ donation rate remains below one donor per million population, underscoring a severe gap between demand and available donors. Hospital leaders and medical personnel felicitated organ donor families and showcased successful transplant case studies to bust common myths and encourage individuals to pledge their organs. The initiative aims to build a sustainable organ donation network in Karnataka, encouraging families to support posthumous organ pledges and easing the burden on tertiary care transplantation centers in the state.
