SBI Issues Customer Advisory Ahead of Proposed 3-Day Nationwide Bank Strike

State Bank of India (SBI) has issued a nationwide advisory asking customers to plan and complete their branch-related banking transactions ahead of a proposed three-day strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) from September 28 to September 30, 2026. The UFBU, an umbrella body representing seven major banking unions that cover nearly 90 percent of bank officers and staff across India, has announced the strike to press for key demands, including the implementation of a five-day work week and revisions to pension structures. Because September 26 and 27 fall on Saturday and Sunday, physical branch banking services could be severely restricted for five consecutive days for millions of account holders across the country. SBI emphasized that while necessary arrangements are being made to minimize inconvenience, operations requiring physical documentation, cheque clearances, or counter assistance from staff are likely to face delays during the strike period. To prevent inconvenience, the bank urged citizens to utilize alternate digital platforms such as Internet Banking, the YONO app, Mobile Banking, and UPI services. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs), and Customer Service Points (CSPs) are expected to remain functional for basic cash transactions. Public and private sector bank account holders across India are being advised to settle urgent financial documentation well before the strike commences.
