Tanvi Patri Wins Girls' Singles U17 Crown at Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Chengdu

Fifteen-year-old Indian shuttler Tanvi Patri created history on September 13, 2026, by securing the girls' singles Under-17 title at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships held at the Chengdu Wenjiang Gymnasium in China. In a hard-fought, all-Indian final lasting 46 minutes, second-seeded Patri rallied after losing the opening game to defeat sixth seed Shaina Manimuthu 11-15, 15-10, 15-12. With this victory, Patri became the first Indian shuttler to complete a rare continental double, having previously won the Asian U15 girls' singles title in 2024. Her triumph ensured that the Asian U17 girls' singles trophy remained with India for a second consecutive year, following Diksha Sudhakar's historic gold medal win in 2025. En route to the summit clash, Patri displayed remarkable resilience, navigating a challenging draw by defeating three top Chinese players and a Japanese opponent in multi-game contests. The young shuttler from Odisha, who received early coaching in Kunshan, China, before moving back to India, has enjoyed a sensational 2026 season. Prior to her continental success in Chengdu, Patri clinched her first senior international title at the Pontianak International Challenge in Indonesia and won the All India Junior U19 ranking tournament in Bengaluru. India also finished the tournament with a bronze medal in the U15 boys' doubles category, earned by the pair of Aaditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma after reaching the semi-finals.
