Tumakuru Becomes Karnataka's First Smart City to Achieve 100 Percent Project Completion

Tumakuru has officially become the first among the seven designated smart cities in Karnataka to achieve 100 percent physical and financial closure of all projects under the Smart Cities Mission. The achievement was highlighted during an official media delegation visit to the city, where officials from Tumakuru Smart City Limited detailed the completion of infrastructure works executed with a total expenditure of ₹994 crore against an allocated funding of ₹1,000 crore, shared equally by the Central and Karnataka state governments. Despite being the smallest city selected under the national mission in Karnataka, Tumakuru focused its development strategy primarily on its Central Business District (CBD) across a 3-kilometer radius. This targeted area-based approach covered 11 percent of the city's geographical expanse and served 14 percent of its population spread across 55 municipal wards. Key accomplishments under the urban transformation package include the free relocation of 55 to 60 slum families into modern G+4 residential apartments. Furthermore, the city upgraded street lighting by replacing old fixtures with 40,000 smart LED lights linked to a Centrally Controlled Monitoring System (CCMS) under a public-private partnership. This transition reduced Tumakuru's monthly municipal power bill from ₹1.2 crore to ₹45 lakh, generating savings of ₹60 lakh per month. Additionally, around ₹250 crore was invested in major road corridor upgrades and modern transit infrastructure, establishing Tumakuru as a model urban center in southern India.
