Union Ministry Unveils Dual Initiatives to Propel Indian Cinema Towards Global Competitiveness and Infrastructure Growth

In a significant move to invigorate the Indian film industry, the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced two major policy decisions aimed at fostering global competitiveness and expanding cinema infrastructure. The first initiative involves the constitution of a high-level Study Group, to be chaired by industry veteran Prasoon Joshi, comprising experts and technology partners. This group is tasked with conducting a comprehensive examination of the opportunities and challenges facing Indian cinema. A key focus will be on recommending measures to enhance the global competitiveness of Indian films, exploring the integration of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and virtual production into filmmaking processes, and devising strategies for improving filmmakers' access to institutional finance and alternative funding sources. The group will also work on a long-term policy framework for the industry's sustained growth, consulting with various stakeholders across the country and submitting its report within three months. The second major announcement concerns the introduction of Model State Cinema Regulations. Recognizing that varying state-level approval procedures often create delays and discourage investment in cinema infrastructure, especially in smaller towns and rural areas, the Ministry has developed a standardized set of model rules. These regulations, drafted after extensive consultations, aim to simplify regulatory processes, create a uniform policy environment, and encourage the establishment of new cinema halls and theatres. The Centre has circulated these model regulations to all state governments for adoption and has offered assistance in their implementation. These twin initiatives underscore the government's commitment to building a stronger, more modern, and globally competitive Indian film industry, promoting creativity, innovation, and broader public access to cinema.
