Dakshina Kannada Pioneers Nation's First Rural Dry Waste-to-Energy Pellet Plant

The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat has marked a significant milestone by commissioning India's first rural center dedicated to converting non-recyclable dry waste into energy pellets. Located in Kemral, Mulky taluk, this pioneering initiative addresses the critical issue of waste management by transforming discarded materials such as clothes, slippers, and single-use plastic items into high-calorific-value Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) pellets. The project eliminates the previous cost-intensive process of baling dry waste and transporting it hundreds of kilometers to cement units in North Karnataka. The facility, established under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) with an investment of approximately ₹48 lakh, boasts a processing capacity of two tonnes of dry waste per day. These energy pellets are designed to serve as an alternative industrial fuel, capable of replacing coal in various industrial boilers, including those in sugarcane units. A Pune-based firm has already entered into an agreement to purchase these pellets at ₹5 per kg, ensuring a commercial value for previously unusable waste. This initiative not only offers an eco-friendly solution to waste disposal but also creates local employment opportunities, as the unit is managed by the Kordabbu Sanjeevini Gram Panchayat Level Federation. With four material recovery facilities in Dakshina Kannada collectively receiving around 22 tonnes of dry waste daily, of which 60% is non-recyclable, the new pellet plant provides a sustainable and economically viable solution for the region's waste management challenges.
