Grand Mouneshwara Chariot Festival Celebrated at Varavi in Shirahatti Taluk

The historic pilgrimage center of Sri Kshetra Varavi, situated in Shirahatti taluk of Gadag district, witnessed a grand celebration of the annual Sri Mouneshwara chariot festival (Rathotsava). Thousands of devotees from across Karnataka and neighboring districts converged on Varavi to participate in the religious event, which serves as a symbol of communal harmony and deep faith. From early morning, special pujas, yajnas, and flag-hoisting rituals were conducted at the ancient Varavi Mouneshwara temple under the guidance of religious heads and the temple trust. As the beautifully decorated wooden chariot was drawn in the evening, the atmosphere reverberated with chants of 'Hara Hara Mahadeva' and traditional Sufi-Saint invocations, reflecting the syncretic cultural heritage of the shrine. Devotees tossed dates and bananas onto the moving ratha as offerings and prayed for community welfare and prosperity. Large crowds arrived in buses, cars, and traditional bullock carts, with many women taking advantage of the state's Shakti free bus travel scheme. Heavy police security and local civic arrangements ensured smooth movement and safety. For the residents of Shirahatti taluk, the annual Varavi Jatra is not only a major spiritual event but also a key socio-economic gathering that boosts local commerce, hospitality, and rural transport.
