Iddalagi Fire Incident: Government Promises Permanent Relocation For Displaced Flood Victims In Hunagunda

A devastating accidental fire destroyed nearly 30 temporary sheds housing Narayanapura reservoir flood-displaced families in Iddalagi village of Hunagunda taluk, Bagalkote district. Fortunately, no human casualties were reported as residents had gathered at a nearby temple for a Shravana month religious discourse when the blaze erupted, though gas cylinder explosions completely gutted foodgrains, clothes, essential documents, and household possessions. The victims, who have resided in makeshift shelters for nearly 18 years awaiting proper rehabilitation, had been conducting a prolonged 117-day protest demanding permanent housing sites and basic civic infrastructure. Visiting Iddalagi village on September 1 to inspect the damage and distribute emergency food kits, Bagalkote District In-charge Minister Vijayanand Kashappanavar assured affected families that the state government would take definitive steps to relocate vulnerable flood-prone villages permanently. Accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Sangappa and local leaders, the minister announced that temporary relief shelters would be established immediately alongside financial compensation following a comprehensive loss assessment by officials. He promised to table their key demand—allocating four guntas of land per family instead of one—before the state cabinet to ensure complete rehabilitation for Hunagunda's displaced residents.
