India Prepares National Framework for Agentic AI Payments on UPI Ecosystem

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is preparing to launch a national framework known as the Unified Agent Protocol (UAP), which will allow artificial intelligence agents to execute small-value digital transactions on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) without requiring manual approval for each payment. This initiative aims to integrate autonomous AI commerce directly into India's digital payments infrastructure. The rollout will position India among the first nations to establish countrywide digital rails for agentic payments. Under the proposed protocol, users can delegate limited purchasing authority to AI assistants within pre-defined constraints, including spending ceilings, approved vendors, and transaction timeframes. The framework leverages existing UPI capabilities such as UPI Circle, which enables primary account holders to delegate payment rights, and Reserve Pay, which sets aside funds for recurring or conditional debits. Initial applications are expected to target routine, low-value consumer purchases such as grocery deliveries and automated e-commerce checkouts, before expanding to higher-value or complex financial instructions like algorithmic investments. While the framework promises convenience by automating everyday commercial tasks, it introduces new operational and security challenges for financial institutions. Banks and payment providers will need to adapt their fraud-monitoring and identity-verification systems to distinguish legitimate AI-generated orders from unauthorized or manipulated transactions. The NPCI is reportedly establishing audit trails, identity checks, and a liability policy to address disputes arising from faulty or unintended AI payments. In August 2026 alone, UPI handled over 24.51 billion transactions valued at approximately ₹29.82 trillion. Bringing agentic payments to this vast ecosystem represents a major milestone in the evolution of digital finance and autonomous commerce in India.
