Indian Railways PRS Sets All-Time Record with 22.26 Lakh Single-Day Ticket Bookings

Indian Railways achieved a major operational milestone as its Passenger Reservation System recorded its highest-ever single-day ticket bookings on September 7, 2026. For the first time in the platform's nearly four-decade history, daily ticket bookings crossed the 22-lakh mark, reaching a total of 22,26,786 bookings. This represents a 9 percent surge compared to the previous single-day record of 20,45,272 tickets, which was set on August 19, 2025. Developed and managed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems, the Passenger Reservation System serves as the backbone of reserved train travel across India. Introduced initially in 1986 to replace manual ticketing procedures, the system has undergone massive modernization to handle online, mobile, and counter-based reservations across the vast rail network. Officials highlighted that the milestone underscores the platform's capacity to process high-volume demand efficiently as passenger traffic continues to rise post-monsoon and ahead of upcoming festival travel seasons. The record booking numbers come as Indian Railways continues to upgrade its digital technology, ticketing infrastructure, and passenger services. Officials confirmed that CRIS is working on rolling out enhanced features, including AI-driven waitlist predictions and higher transactional throughput, ensuring that millions of commuters can secure seats without system outages or prolonged delays.
