Karnataka Deputy CM Appeals to PM Modi for Substantial Central Aid for Bengaluru Infrastructure and Key Irrigation Projects

Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, has recently engaged with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advocating for substantial financial intervention from the Union government to bolster key development initiatives within the state. During their meeting, Shivakumar presented a formal appeal, highlighting the urgent need for central assistance to fund critical infrastructure projects in Bengaluru and to advance significant irrigation schemes across Karnataka. The Deputy CM specifically outlined a requirement for a substantial ₹36,950 crore allocation from the Central Budget for a proposed tunnel project aimed at easing Bengaluru's burgeoning traffic congestion. Furthermore, he reiterated the state's long-standing demand for ₹53,000 crore from the Ministry of Jal Shakti for the Upper Bhadra Project, a crucial irrigation endeavor designed to provide drinking water and irrigation to drought-prone central Karnataka. Shivakumar also pressed for the development of a 'GIFT City-like' project in Bengaluru, signaling a vision for enhancing the city's financial and technological landscape. The appeal extends beyond specific projects, reflecting a broader strategy by the Karnataka government to foster a more cooperative federalism, setting aside political differences to secure central funding and approvals for projects worth more than ₹30,000 crore. This shift in approach is aimed at accelerating development, addressing pressing urban challenges like population pressure, and ensuring sustainable water resource management amidst ongoing disputes such as the Mahadayi River water issue. The state recognizes Bengaluru's significant contribution as a major tax contributor to the national exchequer, asserting that this warrants greater central support for its continued growth and the overall welfare of Karnataka.
