Cauvery Water Dispute Intensifies: Tamil Nadu Seeks Supreme Court Intervention Against Karnataka

The perennial Cauvery water-sharing dispute has once again flared up, with Tamil Nadu officially approaching the Supreme Court on August 3, 2026, to compel Karnataka to release its due share of water. This move comes after the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) upheld a directive by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) on July 30, instructing Karnataka to ensure a daily flow of 3,500 cusecs at Biligundlu for 15 days, starting July 29. Tamil Nadu alleges that Karnataka has failed to comply with this order, with actual inflows significantly below the directed quantity. The state's petition highlights that despite heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of Karnataka's major reservoirs (KRS, Kabini, Harangi, and Hemavathi), which collectively held over 77 tmcft of water by August 3, the required water has not been released. Karnataka, in response, has indicated its compliance with panel orders while prioritizing drought management and addressing its own drinking water needs. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that Karnataka has consulted all political parties and is preparing its legal response. The dispute, which often intensifies during periods of deficient monsoon rainfall, has prompted pro-Kannada groups to call for a state-wide bandh on August 13. This legal and political battle underscores the persistent challenges in implementing equitable water-sharing mechanisms, especially in years of water scarcity.
