India Accelerates Skill Development for a Future-Ready, AI-Driven Workforce

India is proactively transforming its skill development landscape to create a future-ready workforce, aligning with the ambitious 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision. Central to this strategy are comprehensive government initiatives that integrate school education, vocational training, higher education, apprenticeships, and lifelong learning into a cohesive talent development ecosystem. The objective extends beyond mere job creation, aiming to equip the workforce with skills adaptable to rapid technological advancements, including artificial intelligence and automation. The India Skills Report 2026 indicates a steady rise in employability, reaching 56.4 percent in 2026 from 46 percent in 2020, reflecting the positive impact of these structured programs. Key programs include the 'YUVA AI for ALL' initiative under the IndiaAI Mission, which has already seen over 85 lakh (8.5 million) enrollments, making AI fundamentals accessible to a wider population beyond engineering students. Furthermore, the 'PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI)' initiative is converting existing government schools into model institutions that emphasize experiential learning, digital education, and 21st-century competencies. As of June 2026, over 13,000 PM SHRI schools have been established.
