India Bolsters Domestic Electronics Manufacturing with New ECMS Project Approvals

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has announced a significant acceleration in India's electronics manufacturing capabilities with the approval of 31 new proposals under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). This latest round of approvals brings the total number of approved projects under ECMS to 106, with a cumulative investment exceeding ₹69,548 crore. The initiative aims to foster a strong 'Swadeshi' (indigenous) electronics value chain, moving beyond mere assembly to the domestic production of crucial components and raw materials. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that 38 plants are already operational, and 16 more are in advanced stages of construction or machinery installation. The newly approved projects are set to create 9,588 direct jobs and strengthen India's journey towards self-reliance in the electronics sector. This development is pivotal for consumer gadgets, smartphones, laptops, and other devices, as it ensures a stable and local supply of essential parts like filters, coils, speakers, and metal shielding covers, reducing dependency on imports and potentially leading to more affordable and readily available electronic products for consumers. The expansion of domestic manufacturing capacity is a critical step towards India becoming a global hub for electronics production.
