Karnataka Government Plans Rs 5,000 Crore Kanteerava Stadium Overhaul for International Sports

The Karnataka government has unveiled ambitious plans to redevelop the iconic Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, proposing an investment of approximately Rs 5,000 crore to elevate it to international standards. Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, who also holds the sports portfolio, announced that the comprehensive overhaul aims to equip the stadium with the necessary infrastructure to host prestigious global sporting events, including the Commonwealth Games. Currently, the stadium's facilities are deemed suitable primarily for national-level competitions. The proposed upgrade will involve state-of-the-art amenities and infrastructure to meet global benchmarks, a decision which is expected to be finalized by the State Cabinet. Beyond the stadium's physical transformation, the announcement highlights a wider commitment to sports development in Karnataka. The government has also introduced several supportive measures for student sportspersons, including attendance relaxation of 15% for state and national-level participants, and 25% for international competitors. Furthermore, a government order has been issued to allow student athletes with as low as 50% attendance to appear for examinations, ensuring their academic pursuits are not hampered by their sporting commitments. Employment opportunities for accomplished sportspersons are also being prioritized, with the state cabinet having approved a 2% reservation in the recruitment process for 72,000 vacant government posts, creating approximately 2,000 positions for athletes. This multi-faceted approach aims to create a robust sports ecosystem in Karnataka, fostering talent, improving facilities, and recognizing sporting excellence.
