Bengaluru Space Startup GalaxEye Secures US Patent for OptoSAR Satellite Technology

Bengaluru-based space technology startup GalaxEye announced on September 8, 2026, that it has secured a United States patent for the core technology behind its OptoSAR satellite imaging system. The achievement makes GalaxEye the first Indian private space startup to receive a US patent specifically dedicated to satellite Earth-observation hardware and system architecture. The patented OptoSAR technology synchronizes optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors on a single satellite platform. While traditional Earth observation requires separate satellites for optical imagery and radar data, GalaxEye's integrated system collects spatially and temporally aligned imagery simultaneously. Optical sensors deliver rich visual and spectral details under clear daylight, whereas SAR sensors penetrate dense clouds, fog, and darkness. Combining both capabilities onto a single spacecraft provides all-weather, round-the-clock planetary monitoring. Lauded by former ISRO Chairman S. Somanath for its technical innovation and commercial potential, the development bolsters GalaxEye's intellectual property portfolio as it prepares to deploy a 30-satellite constellation over the next five years. Following its recent acquisition of Bengaluru-based spacecraft engineering firm StarOps in August, GalaxEye aims to cater to defense, agriculture, maritime intelligence, and disaster management sectors across global markets. This breakthrough reinforces Karnataka's reputation as a pioneer in deep-tech innovation and private space technology.
