Karnataka Accelerates AI Adoption with New University and Decentralized Tech Policy

The Karnataka government is embarking on an ambitious journey to cement its position as a leading technology hub by unveiling plans for a dedicated Artificial Intelligence University and a comprehensive policy to decentralize IT growth. Announced by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, these initiatives are set to be rolled out within the next 100 days, signaling a strategic shift to distribute technological development and opportunities beyond the capital city of Bengaluru. The proposed AI University, envisioned as a public-private partnership with early discussions reportedly involving tech giants like Google, will serve as a cornerstone for advanced AI education, research, and innovation. Further emphasizing inclusive growth, the state cabinet has already approved a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Raichur, with an outlay of ₹12 crore over five years. This center aims to become a regional hub for the 13 districts of North Karnataka, focusing on developing AI-based solutions for critical sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The broader tech expansion policy seeks to incentivize companies to establish operations in emerging cities like Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, and Belagavi by offering world-class, low-cost office infrastructure, potentially as affordable as 50 cents per square foot. This dual approach of fostering specialized AI talent from an early age—with plans to introduce AI curricula in rural schools from Class 6 onwards—and creating conducive environments for businesses across the state is expected to boost Karnataka's software exports, which are projected to exceed INR 5.5 lakh crore this year.
