Karnataka Launches KEO AI Computing Device to Democratize Technology Access Across the State

The Karnataka government, led by Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, has unveiled a significant technological initiative with the launch of KEO (Knowledge-driven, Economical and Open-source), an innovative AI-ready computing device. Developed in collaboration with the Department of Electronics, IT and Biotechnology, KEONICS, semiconductor partners, and AI-focused system integrators, KEO is designed to make artificial intelligence and advanced computing accessible to a wider demographic, particularly students, small businesses, and institutions in rural areas where internet connectivity might be limited. KEO stands out with its open-source RISC-V processor architecture, open-source hardware and software components, and a dedicated on-device AI accelerator. This unique combination allows AI applications to run locally, reducing reliance on constant cloud connectivity and making it highly suitable for communities with inconsistent internet access. The device, described as a "Made-in-Karnataka" platform, aims to reverse the trend of technology opportunities being concentrated solely in urban hubs like Bengaluru, fostering a distributed talent pool across the state. The initial phase will see the rollout of 3,000 KEO devices, with plans to deploy approximately 2,222 KEO AI PCs in 239 taluks and 31 model residential schools. The government's vision is to eventually extend this technology to every government school in Karnataka, ensuring that a child's access to technology and opportunities is not dictated by their geographical location or economic background. This initiative underscores Karnataka's commitment to inclusive innovation and leveraging technology for broader social impact.
