Karnataka is set to solidify its position as a global technology hub with the ambitious announcement of India's first government-led Artificial Intelligence (AI) University and a dedicated AI Hub in Bengaluru. The initiative, unveiled by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar during Google I/O Connect India 2026, marks a significant step towards developing a robust AI ecosystem in the state. The proposed AI University, planned for a 100-acre campus in Bengaluru with regional campuses in other key cities, will focus on fostering world-class AI talent, promoting advanced research, and strengthening collaboration among academia, industry, and government.
Accompanying the university, the AI Hub will serve as an innovation and incubation center, actively supporting startups, technology companies, researchers, and entrepreneurs working on cutting-edge AI solutions. This dual approach aims to accelerate the development and commercialization of new AI technologies. The Chief Minister emphasized Karnataka's vision to become an "AI-native State," where AI is seamlessly integrated into governance to enhance public service delivery, improve education, strengthen healthcare, provide better advisory services to farmers, and empower small businesses in the digital economy.
The state government is also working on a comprehensive Karnataka AI Policy to attract further investments and cultivate a globally competitive AI environment. Furthermore, plans include introducing AI education from Class VI onwards to build foundational skills early and developing two hyperscale green data centers – one near Bengaluru and another along the coastline – to support the immense computing requirements of AI applications. These strategic moves underscore Karnataka's commitment to preparing a future-ready workforce and maintaining its leadership in India's technology sector, which currently accounts for approximately 40% of the nation's software exports.
The Karnataka government has launched a Startup Exchange Programme with European partners, including We Make Future and VivaTech, to enable local startups to access European markets, investors, and innovation networks. This initiative aims to deepen international collaborations and create global growth opportunities for emerging tech companies in the state.
