The Karnataka State Kambala Association is organizing a 10-day state-level residential training camp for Kambala runners in Karkala starting September 16, ahead of the upcoming coastal Karnataka traditional buffalo racing season. The camp aims to groom aspiring young sprinters in traditional Kambala jockeying skills, physical endurance, sprint mechanics, and animal handling techniques under the guidance of seasoned Kambala veterans.
In recent years, the traditional folk sport of Kambala has witnessed a massive surge in popularity among coastal youth, inspired by famous Kambala sprinters like Srinivas Gowda and Nishant Shetty. To cater to this growing interest, the annual training program selects promising participants from across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasaragod districts. During the intensive 10-day session held at the Karkala track, trainees will undergo disciplined fitness routines, tactical training, and practical practice runs with trained buffaloes.
For residents and sports enthusiasts of Karkala taluk, hosting this prestigious state-level training camp underscores the town's prominent role in preserving and promoting Tulunadu's rich cultural heritage. The camp is expected to nurture fresh athletic talent for the competitive Kambala circuit scheduled for the 2026-27 season.
